FALL 2008 PRESS RELEASE
CHORAL ARTS SOCIETY INTRODUCES NEW DIRECTOR
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
The Choral Arts Society has just celebrated it’s 70th Anniversary Season (2007-2008),
making us the oldest continuously operating chorus in Westchester County.
But, while our history may be old, we are feeling quite new this season. We have a brilliant, young, new Music Director, Michael Conley, who is making us work very hard to produce a fresh, new, choral tone. Check out our website, recently updated with a new look, and learn all about Michael and our new plans. We are so lucky to have found such an able, accomplished and dedicated leader for progress into the future.
Our Winter 2009 Concert, EMBRACING ALL, will take place on January 11th at 4:00pm.
We will join forces with MAYA, the celebrated instrumental trio (flute, harp, percussion)
in a unique program of rhythmic, vibrant, soulful music from around the world.
It will feature the improvised Congolese setting of the catholic mass from the 60’s,
MISSA LUBA, for chorus and tenor soloist, with percussion. Our Spring 2009 Concert,
MONKS AND SAGES, SACRED PLACES, will take place on May 17th at 4pm and will be performed
with New York City’s West Village Chorale. 100 voices join in presenting two of the
twentieth century’s most celebrated choral spectaculars, Carl Orff’s CARMINA BURANA and CHICHESTER PSALMS by Leonard Berstein, along with music for multiple choirs.
This is grand, glorious, inspiring choral music and a “must hear” concert! Both
concerts will be held at the beautiful Scarborough Presbyterian Church in Briarcliff Manor.
Of his new charges, Michael Conley says, “The CAS is a talented, dedicated and truly fun group of
singers and I am thrilled to be starting out with them in this new and exciting musical partnership.
They already have a long and distinguished history of innovative and unique programming and I am determined
to continue that fine tradition while also drawing on my own interests and experience to bring the best
of the vast choral repertoire – old, new, familiar, under-performed as well as beloved classics –
to the Westchester community.” Michael Conley also conducts Manhattan’s West Village Chorale,
the High School Chorus at the Dalton School, and is the Music Director at Judson Memorial Church on Washington
Square. Along with his work as a conductor he is also active as a pianist, both accompanying and chamber
music, and as a composer.
